Staff Advisory Council Meeting Agenda

9:00 to 10:30 am

  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry, discussed the Pro Humanitate Institute and Anna Julia Cooper Center.  Details of her presentation can be found here.
    • Fun fact: Melissa hosted her own talk show on MSNBC from 2012-2016
    • She founded the Anna Julia Cooper Center (AJC)
    • Melissa is also the Faculty and Executive Director of Pro Humanitate Institute (PHI)
      • January 1 is the end of her term leading Pro Humanitate Institute
    • Difference between AJC and PHI
      • AJC: a Faculty driven research center. 100 million dollars in commitments that can be used across the center. Also launched their first CDF Freedom School this summer. There are 3 total staff members at AJC.
      • PHI: tasked with taking what already exists at Wake Forest and making it substantial. Moved off campus to serve both the campus and the community. Discussed the BUILD, SPARC, and Deacon Camp Pre-Orientation Programs. Following Pre-orientation students can stay in involved with PHI through the Dash Program. The PHI also developed ACE courses, focused on community engaged teaching and research.
        • Legacy and Philanthropy Programs—Project Pumpkin, Hit the Bricks, Pump up for Piccolo, Wake N Shake. Campus Kitchen—led by students, helped serve over 14,000 meals in 2016.
        • Wake Alternative Breaks—nearly 100 participants spend their Spring Break giving back to communities in need.
        • Social Justice Programs—Branches program (DC over Fall Break). Wake the Vote—programed for the campus. They collected data, and now writing a book and curriculum around the experience. Diaper Bank—hosted by PHI House.
      • Both programs are collecting data to drive accountability.
      • The PHI holds an Open Lunch on Tuesdays at 12noon (free food, easy parking, shuttle access). All are welcome!

    • Events: Nothing to report.
    • Fringe Benefits: Lots of things happening in November—check out the PDC website for more information, https://pdc.wfu.edu/
    • Membership: We are still in search of 1 member. If you have any recommendations let us know!
    • Pro Humanitate: Promoting the Puerto Rico Supply Drive. We are collecting through Dec 5, check staff advisory newsletter for more information.
  • Outside Committee Report-outs:  SAC representatives on other committees
    • Capital Planning Advisory: Nothing to report.
    • Faculty Senate: Nothing to report.
    • Parking & Transportation: Nothing to report. Committee meets tomorrow.
    • Tree Advisory: Nothing to report.
    • DIPC: International Education week is happening next week. A letter has been written by José Villalba for those who hire in our departments, to be sent to the finalists of our searches who are coming to campus, offering the opportunity to meet with leaders of several departments.
    • Finance Advisory: Nothing to report.
    • Poverty Task Force: Nothing to report.
    • Professional Development: Nothing to report.
    • Campus Rec Advisory Board: discussed the opportunities available to staff—training sessions, small group sessions, intramurals, and discounted massages—check them out!
  • Raffle Drawing!—Melissa won a $25 gift card to Bibs

  • Our own Jason Lowe, assistant head coach of the women’s Soccer team tells us that his team has advanced to the NCAA tournament, and is hosting Georgetown this Friday night at 7pm. He’d love to see a strong staff turn-out!
