Phil Archer, Betsy Main Babcock Deputy Director of Reynolda House

  • Completed in 1917 by R.J. and Katharine Reynolds
  • 3,000 square feet family home; a community Katharine developed around the home – extension service to learn about farming – 16-acre lake, schools, churches
  • Mary Reynolds Babcock – wanted to purchase siblings’ shares to preserve Reynolda
  • Charles Babcock – instrumental with preserving Reynolda and shepherding the college’s move from Wake Forest to Winston-Salem after his wife’s death
  • Museum opened in 1967; formal affiliation with the university in 2005
  • 26+ exhibitions; Spring 2019 Hopper to Pollock: American Modernsism  (1902-1952)
  • Have a series of events such as Oh, Hoppy Day on Thursdays
  • Reynolda Revealed – an app that explores the stories of the people of Reynolda; 1979-80 recorded individuals associated with the estate totaling 44 oral histories; fully bilingual English and Spanish; it is an exploration of the house and grounds through the lives of those who lived and worked on the estate
  • Upcoming exhibitions:
    • August 30-December 31- Leyendecker and the Golden Age of American Illustration; preeminent illustrator in 1910-20s; Leyendecker had 322 covers for The Post
    • March-June 2020 – Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light
  • Roof Replacement: received a grant to assist with the reparation; will stay open during the replacement; working with the original company who produced the roof tiles
  • Recommendations to engage with Reynolda:
    • Walk the Reynolda Trail or attend an Object of the Month Talk for a break in the work day
    • Sign up your favorite kid for the summer camps at the Museum or Gardens.
    • Bring a friend – it’s free for you AND them
    • Schedule a department retreat. Looking at the art is a great tool for creative breakthroughs
    • Practice slow looking (at art)

  • Founded in 1963
  • Staff: Dr. Andrew Gurstelle, Academic Director; Tina Smith, Museum Educator; and Stormy Harrell, Collections Manager
  • Open Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00am – 4:30pm; Free admission (for everyone, not just WFU!)
  • Current Exhibitions:
  • MOA has 30,000 objects ethnographic and archaeological artifacts representing more than 90 countries and 350 cultures.
  • Serve WFU students – academic courses – visit museum to see objects related to course topic/content
  • They store their collection at the materials management warehouse in downtown
  • They have 4 work study students; and a FT summer student employee
  • K-12 education – 8,000 school children per year participate with MOA; programs will be at local libraries; no longer offers summer camp; and facilitate programs for children groups such as girl scouts
  • Lectures, Discussions, and Films: Upcoming film “Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It” – an interpretation of Purple Rain filtered through a different cultural lens, happening April 22, 7pm
  • Open Houses: Meet Oscar, the camel, on Saturday, March 23, 1-4pm – craft activities, sensory experience
  • Supporting the Museum: MOA Friends and Conversation Fund – supports caring for their collection; need assistance from outside experts to preserve artifacts

    • Gamelan Ensemble Performance and Reception on March 28 at 5pm; Performance at 5:30pm and Artist Presentation and Reception on March 29 at 5-7pm
    • Stop in Motion: in search of the still image – Alexandra Davenport-February 4-March 31
    • Student Art Exhibition and Honors in Studio Art: April 18 – May 20
      • Students present and sell their work; the university acquires some of the work from the exhibition to display on campus

START Gallery

  • Students gain experience and transferable skills in the visual arts market; experiential learning laboratory with opportunity to participate in management and operation of the gallery
  • Student Exhibition: Institutional Memory – Digital Photography by Danielle Fliegel; March 19-April 12; Reception on Tuesday, March 19
  • Student Exhibition: Honors in Studio Art – Caroline LeDuc; April 23-May 10
  • START Yourself – students may approach START Gallery to have an exhibition

University Art Collections

  • The collection can be seen throughout campus such as Benson Center; responsible maintenance
  • The student union art collection – the premier collection – happens every 4 years – granted $100K to travel to NYC and purchase art; competitive process; next trip will be 2020-2021 academic year
  • Identified a curator for the university art collection after a 2-year search

Standing Committee Report-Outs

Communications – Increasingly receiving requests to include events/topics in the SAC newsletter – individuals can complete the request form or reach out to anyone on the committee; continuing to support the event team for the staff event in June via communication efforts by drafting a letter to send to offices/departments garnering support for staff attendance to the event; the committees are seeking approval from Hof Milam and Malika Roman Isler to sign off on the letters as an endorsement of support

Events – Working on details for staff event – brainstorming ideas for giveaways and door prizes; will identify days/times to meet at WakerSpace to make items for the event and would like support from the SAC members; faculty/staff may donate items under $100 as door prizes for the event; and the committee welcomes for suggestions for departments/offices to donate – they recommend reaching out to the committee to be sure they haven’t already contacted the office/department

Fringe Benefits – No updates at this time.

Membership – Everyone be sure to vote once the ballots are sent and received; the ballots should be sent on March 12

Pro Humanitate – The second meal was served at Ronald McDonald House in February – there is a group who wants to do it every month; The Ronald McDonald house also has the Sport a Shirt, Share a Night Fundraiser – buy $10 shirt to support a family stay at the Ronald McDonald House, Sophia will send more information

Capital Planning Advisory – No meeting

Faculty Senate – The last meeting was held on Wednesday, February 20 in DeTamble Auditorium

  • There was an Ad Hoc committee report on developing a policy for Conflicts of Interest regarding gifts and grants. It is almost ready to be presented to the faculty
  • A discussion was held about the possibility of amending their by-laws to have Senate officers elected at a different time of year so they would not lose momentum during the summer. They will try meeting with incoming officers in May instead of September and then see how that works before changing the bylaws.
  • There was also a discussion on the status of a call for more transparency in the relationship between WFU and the Charles Koch Foundation. The Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate asked the Provost to request that the Koch Foundation publish their contract with WFU on their website.
  • The Faculty Senate has established a Shared Governance committee to develop a document regarding Senate representation in relation to WFU administration and the Board of Trustees. This process is still ongoing.
  • March 6 email from Wilson Parker, President of the Faculty Senate:
    • President Hatch will attend the March 27 Faculty Senate meeting. Please convey this to your colleagues. Please send your (or their) questions to me or a member of the Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee will meet on March 20 to determine a list of questions to submit to President Hatch on March 22.
  • Ellen suggested reviewing the 1st SAC meeting ideas/suggestions and select a few to present to President Hatch during the faculty/senate meeting.

Parking & Transportation – The parking congestion near student health section is under review; new boot/tow policy in fall – there is a concern of not having a tier system of warnings, habitual offenders will be booted/towed off campus – to correct the behavior and minimize offense; ZSR library – after regular shift hours makes it difficult for 2nd shift staff to find parking at 5pm as students tend to take the spots

Tree Advisory – Not in attendance

Council on Inclusion and Diversity – Met on 2/19 to discuss reactions to yearbook picture; a student anti-racism coalition along with faculty for Wake Forward was formed as they work toward racial equity on campus

Finance Advisory – No meeting

Poverty Task Force – No meeting

Campus Rec Advisory Board – No meeting

Professional Development Advisory Board – It was mentioned as a reminder to look at PDC site to register for WakeSpace workshops

  • WFU will conduct an engagement survey with its faculty and staff from March 25-April 12
  • Emails will be sent to staff/faculty soon requesting feedback on work environment and engagement
  • Modern Think as a confidential 3rd party administrator who is a strategy and management consulting firm working with WFU
  • The survey will provide data to compare with peer institutions allowing for strategy discussion and action planning for next steps on the WFU campus

    • This year, it is recommended to visit the old campus. Alex Crist is donating the fuel and shuttle(s). The proposed date will be the week after commencement. Sarah will reach out to offices to receive endorsement from departments for staff to miss work.
