Staff Advisory Council Meeting Minutes

December 14, 2017 (Benson, Room 401B/D)

9:00 to 10:30 am

  • Guest Speaker: Eric Aft, Second Harvest Food Bank Director  (presentation)
    • What does the Food Bank do?
      • Oversee food pantries, soup kitchens, summer meal programs, weekend meal programs, and teach families to properly cook the foods that they receive
    • The Second Harvest Food Bank serves 18 Counties across the state (most invested in Forsyth and Guilford Counties)
    • 1 in 6 families in our Region face food insecurities and don’t know where their next meal will come from and 50% of students in Forsyth County are on Free or Reduced Lunch
    • How can you volunteer?
      • Volunteers are needed on Thursday evenings and Saturdays
      • Food pantries (stocking shelves and doing quality control of product)
      • Community Gardening
      • Help with nutrition education
      • Advocacy—spread the word and the challenges that are faced locally

  • Guest Speaker: José Villalba, Interim Chief Diversity Officer
    • José has been a faculty member at Wake Forest since 2011
    • Formerly worked in Dean’s Office for 4 years before becoming the interim Chief Diversity Office in August 2017
    • The goals of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI): influence policies as much as possible (gender neutral bathrooms), offer programing, facilitate practice (ODI will work with to make your theory a reality)
    • The ODI advocates policies both internally on campus as well as throughout the community. Focus is on policies that affect our students, faculty, and staff
    • How can new staff members get involved?
      • Meet with Dr. Villalba to discuss your engagement
      • Start with programming

  • Standing Committee Report-outs:   
    • Communications—REQUEST: please let Wendy know who controls the advertising screens around your buildings on/off campus
    • Events—Nothing to report.
    • Fringe Benefits—Nothing to report.
    • Membership—new member Kimberly Snipes who will be joining us in January
    • Pro Humanitate—working on setting up volunteer opportunities for SAC with Second Harvest. Stay tuned!
  • Outside Committee Report-outs:
    • Capital Planning Advisory—Our next meeting is in January
    • Faculty Senate—Working on the next iteration of the Code of Conduct
    • Parking & Transportation—Piloting a van pool program. Encouraging people that work at Wake to van pool. If interested, check out the website below:
    • Tree Advisory—Nothing to report
    • DIPC—Nothing to report
    • Finance Advisory—Nothing to report
    • Poverty Task Force—Nothing to report
    • Professional Development—Nothing to report
    • Campus Rec Advisory Board—The usage of the new facility has exceeded Campus Recreation’s expectations (busiest times are from 3PM-7PM.
      • During the first week of Spring Semester Campus Rec will offer a “try it before you buy it” deal on group classes.
  • Raffle Drawing—Jackie Freedman won a giftcard to River Birch Lodge…enjoy!

General Announcements

  • A great big thank you to Landon Burrow and his team in Facilities and Campus Services for arranging a tunnel tour for us on 12/19 at 3pm! SAC members, if you haven’t already, please be sure to respond yes or no to the calendar invite I sent you, for an accurate head count.
  • Regarding the newsletter – we understand that it may be getting caught in people’s Spam folders. If you didn’t get it in your inbox, be sure to check Spam. If it’s in there, select the email, then click the Not Spam button on top.
  • In the spirit of giving this holiday season, remember the Chaplain’s Emergency Fund is a great way to help folks in our community in need.
  • On 1/22/18 at Wait Chapel—we are hosting the MLK Keynote Speaker, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, please attend this collaboration with WSSU.
